4 Diwali Inspired Arts and Crafts Ideas for Toddlers

Hi everyone! I’m Deepika, the creator of @toddlerseason, an account where you can find simple and fun crafts to do with your children! This Diwali, I’m so excited to be partnering with Modi Toys to share art projects that you can do at home to help teach your children about Diwali and the rich Indian culture and traditions. 

One of the best ways to learn is through exploration and art. These activities will allow your children to learn about the Diwali— all while secretly exercising their creative side, fine motor skills, sensory play and of course, having FUN!

Magic Rangoli 

Materials needed:

  • Paper plate 

  • White crayon 

  • Water colors 

Instructions:

  1. Using your white crayon, draw a Rangoli design on the paper plate 

  2. Have your child use water colors to magically make the Rangoli appear 

This activity is well suited for kids ages 3-5. Watch their faces light up as they uncover the beautiful design! 

 

Dot Paint Henna 

Materials needed: 

  • Construction paper 

  • Sharpie 

  • Q tips 

  • Paint 

Instructions:

  1. Trace your hand with a sharpie on construction paper 

  2. Using your sharpie, draw a henna pattern. Tip: avoid creating too intricate a pattern or the dot paint effect may not appear clearly 

  3. Dip the end of your q-tip in paint and dab the q-tip along the henna pattern, creating a dot effect 

Creation Station Rangoli 

Materials needed:

  • Paper plate 

  • Construction paper

  • Foil (optional) 

  • Glue 

  • Scissors 

Instructions:

  1. Cut different shapes out of your construction paper and foil. A combination of triangles, squares, circles and rectangles is best! 

  2. Using glue, create a pattern with the shapes on the paper plate. 

  3. Cut the edges of the paper plate to create a more intricate look 

Salt Dough Diyas 

Materials needed:

  • 1 cup salt 

  • 2 cups all purpose flour 

  • 1 cup water

  • Paint 

  • Beads or jewels (optional) 

  • Glue (optional) 

Instructions:

  1. Mix salt, water and flour in a bowl until it creates a dough consistency. Knead to blend it all together nicely 

  2. Roll it out with a rolling pin. Use a glass or any circular shape as a cookie cutter. 

  3. Shape the circle into the shape of a diya, punching the ends together. 

  4. Bake the dough at 185 degrees for 60 minutes (flip over half way through to evenly bake both sides) 

  5. Once dough is hardened and cooled, decorate your diya!
